The age and timing of the Permian-Triassic mass extinction have been difficult to determine because zircon populations from the type sections are typically affected by pervasive lead loss and contamination by indistinguishable older xenocrysts. Zircons from nine ash beds within the Shangsi and Meishan sections (China), pretreated by annealing followed by partial attack with hydrofluoric acid, result in suites of consistent and concordant uranium/lead (U/Pb) ages, eliminating the effects of lead loss. The U/Pb age of the main pulse of the extinction is 252.6 +/- 0.2 million years, synchronous with the Siberian flood volcanism, and it occurred within the quoted uncertainty.  相似文献

The objective was to study the effects of tillage and cattle slurry application on organic C dynamics in grassland soils. Treatments included long‐term grassland and reinstalled grassland (after tillage and winter wheat cropping) with and without cattle slurry application (240 kg N ha–1 y–1). A period of 4 y slurry application sufficed to increase microbial activity 1.6‐fold in surface soil (0–10 cm). Tillage affected aggregate distribution and basal respiration in the surface soil.  相似文献

Mid‐infrared spectroscopy (MIRS) is assumed to be superior to near‐infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for the prediction of soil constituents, but its usefulness is still not sufficiently explored. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of MIRS to predict the chemical and biological properties of organic matter in soils and litter. Reflectance spectra of the mid‐infrared region including part of the near‐infrared region (7000–400 cm–1) were recorded for 56 soil and litter samples from agricultural and forest sites. Spectra were used to predict general and biological characteristics of the samples as well as the C composition which was measured by 13C CPMAS‐NMR spectroscopy. A partial least‐square method and cross‐validation were used to develop equations for the different constituents over selected spectra ranges after several mathematical treatments of the spectra. Mid‐infrared spectroscopy predicted well the C : N ratio: the modeling efficiency EF was 0.95, the regression coefficient (a) of a linear regression (measured against predicted values) was 1.0, and the correlation coefficient (r) was 0.98. Satisfactorily (EF ≥ 0.70, 0.8 ≤ a ≤ 1.2, r ≥ 0.80) assessed were the contents of C, N, and lignin, the production of dissolved organic carbon, and the contents of carbonyl C, aromatic C, O‐alkyl C, and alkyl C. However, the N mineralization rate, the microbial biomass and the alkyl–to–aromatic C ratio were predicted less satisfactorily (EF < 0.70). Limiting the sample set to mineral soils did generally not result in improved predictions. The good and satisfactory predictions reported above indicate a marked usefulness of MIRS in the assessment of chemical characteristics of soils and litter, but the accuracies of the MIRS predictions in the diffuse‐reflectance mode were generally not superior to those of NIRS.  相似文献

Quantitative soil organic carbon (SOC) models are required for a better understanding of C sequestration in soils and for prognoses at different scenarios. However, it is unclear whether the major C‐stabilization mechanisms are included adequately. Objectives were (1) to test the performance of the CIPS (Carbon turnover In Pore Space) model and the Rothamsted Carbon (RothC) Model for a prediction of the SOC dynamics at the long‐term experiments at Halle (Germany) and (2) to compare the model structures of the quantitative models and a conceptual model in order to identify shortcomings of the quantitative models. Both quantitative models had a similar prediction performance: the C dynamics was predicted satisfactorily for the Halle sites under continuous rye with NPK fertilization or without any fertilization (1878–1953), but larger deviations between modeled and measured C contents were observed for the continuous rye and maize in the entire period from 1878 to 1996. The comparison of the conceptual model with the quantitative models revealed that the neglect of the black C dynamics and the interactions of SOC with mineral surfaces are not included explicitly. Site‐specific calibrations are required where these processes have a significant impact on soil organic matter dynamics. Furthermore, the number of pools and mechanisms in the conceptual model is higher than in the quantitative models independent of their level of abstraction. Despite the neglect of some important mechanisms in the quantitative models, it has to be noted that they reproduce the SOC data generally well in agricultural surface soils. Moreover, they need only few inputs which are generally easily obtainable.  相似文献

To determine the effects of different processing steps, such as enzymatic treatment of the mash and pasteurization, on selected quality parameters, strawberries were processed to juices and purees. To identify the processing steps causing the highest losses, samples were taken after each step, and ascorbic acid, total phenols, anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity were analyzed. To assess the antioxidant capacity, three different methods were applied: the trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, showing correlation coefficients of 0.889 to 0.948. The antioxidant capacity decreased with processing steps except heat treatment, which partly caused an increase due to the formation of antioxidant active products. The content of ascorbic acid, in comparison to that in the frozen strawberries, decreased significantly during the processing of the fruit to puree by 77%. In the pressed cloudy juices, the loss of ascorbic acid was 37%. The decline of phenolic compounds, measured as total polyphenols and anthocyanins, was smaller (between 30-40%). Pressing and pasteurization were the most critical steps for the decrease of these compounds. The enzymatic treatment of the mash within 90 min supported the release of secondary plant metabolites, while ascorbic acid is reduced up to 20%.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of plant residue decomposability and fungal biomass on the dynamics of macroaggregate (250–2000 μm) formation in a three months' incubation experiment and determined the distribution of residue-derived C and N in the microbial biomass and in aggregate size fractions (250–2000 μm, 53–250 μm and <53 μm) using 13C and 15N data. A silty loam soil (sieved <250 μm) was incubated with and without addition of 15N labelled maize leaves (C/N = 27.4) and roots (C/N = 86.4). Each treatment was carried out with and without fungicide application. The addition of maize residues enhanced soil respiration and microbial biomass C and N and resulted in increased macroaggregate formation with a higher and more rapid maximum macroaggregation in the soil amended with maize leaves than in that with addition of roots. Fungicide application led to a significant decline of microbial biomass C and mineralization of the added residues compared to untreated soils, which demonstrates a successful suppression of part of the active microbial biomass by the fungicide. However, this was not confirmed by a generally lower ergosterol concentration. Consequently, ergosterol was no reliable fungal biomarker in periods of rapid decline of the fungal biomass. A single addition of fungicide was insufficient for continued inhibition of the fungal biomass. Yet, a significant delay (28–42 days) in macroaggregation in fungicide treated compared to untreated samples highlighted the importance of the fungal biomass in macroaggregate formation. Macroaggregates were enriched in maize-derived 13C and 15N compared to microaggregates or the fraction < 53 μm. They turned over rapidly with decreasing substrate availability, which entailed a transfer of maize-derived C and N stored within macroaggregates during the first weeks of incubation to microaggregates with proceeding incubation time. Our results indicate that this transfer happened within macroaggregates, because no considerable amount of free particulate organic matter (POM) was released upon macroaggregate breakdown. We conclude that substrate decomposability and fungal activity are key factors determining extent and dynamics of macroaggregation during decomposition processes. Macroaggregate formation implied rapid incorporation and thereby short-term protection of maize-derived C and N. Moreover, macroaggregates allowed a transfer of maize-derived organic matter into microaggregates within macroaggregates, which prevented the release of significant amounts of free POM upon macroaggregate breakdown. Consequently, macroaggregates constitute to the transfer of recently added C into more stable soil organic matter fractions.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate completeness of excision and clinical outcome in dogs with cutaneous mast cell tumors (MCTs) excised with a lateral margin of 2 cm and a deep margin of 1 fascial plane. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 16 client-owned dogs with 1 or more cutaneous MCTs. PROCEDURE: Excision of MCTs was performed with a 2-cm lateral margin and a deep margin of 1 fascial plane. Histologic tumor grading was performed; surgical margins were categorized as complete or incomplete. Follow-up information was obtained via repeat examination of the dogs by veterinarians or client-completed questionnaires. RESULTS: 4 grade I and 19 grade II cutaneous MCTs were evaluated. Overall, 21 (91%) MCTs were completely excised; 2 grade II tumors had foci of mast cells at the 2-cm margin. Two dogs received adjunctive treatments following surgery. Follow-up information was available for all dogs (median follow-up period, 379 days; range, 51 to 538 days); no local recurrence was detected during this time. De novo MCTs were detected in 3 of 16 dogs at 37, 54, and 154 days after surgery. Via Kaplan-Meier analysis, median survival time and disease-free interval were both > 538 days (medians not yet reached). No prognostic variables were identified. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Excision with a 2-cm lateral margin and a deep margin of 1 fascial plane may result in satisfactory excision of grades I and II MCTs in dogs, with recurrence rates similar to those reported previously. Use of these margins may minimize complications associated with larger local tumor resection.  相似文献

Streptococcus equi subspecies (ssp.) equi infection (strangles) remains one of the most frequently diagnosed and costly infectious diseases of horses. Large breeding herds, where a disease outbreak competes for personnel and financial resources needed for foaling management, present a special challenge for equine practitioners. A 15‐month outbreak involving 62 clinical cases of strangles occurred on a large Standardbred breeding farm (average population of 1400 horses). Sixteen asymptomatic horses were found to be PCR (polymerase chain reaction)‐positive for S. equi ssp. equi. During the outbreak, serological samples from 48 clinically normal horses were found to be seropositive for S. equi ssp. equi, confirming herd‐wide exposure. After several clinical cases of strangles had been diagnosed, an intranasal S. equi ssp. equi vaccine was administered to clinically normal horses (n = 558) considered to be at risk of exposure. Strangles complications included 7 fatalities (none in vaccinated horses) and 6 cases of purpura haemorrhagica (4 in vaccinated horses). Midway through the outbreak, injectable, sustained release ceftiofur crystalline free acid (CCFA), given as an initial dose followed by a second dose 4 days later, was used exclusively for systemic antimicrobial treatment of clinically affected and PCR‐positive horses. This antimicrobial regimen coincided with a reduction in disease incidence and eventual resolution of the outbreak. Two horses with persistent guttural pouch infection were endoscopically confirmed as carrier horses. The herd history demonstrated that a strangles outbreak will often result in asymptomatic carrier horses and that identification and treatment of these horses are necessary to eliminate long‐term sources of infection. Ceftiofur crystalline free acid was found to be a suitable antimicrobial due to its activity against S. equi ssp. equi and the efficiencies associated with twice parenteral dosing during a 10‐day treatment period. Occurrence of purpura in 4 vaccinated horses suggests that vaccination should be reserved for healthy seronegative horses and avoided during an active outbreak.  相似文献
